<image:title>PDFAA News - Fly Tying Social - Tuesday 4th March, 2025 saw a good sized gathering of PDFAA members come together to tie flies, share flies, show their stuff and share their excitement for the coming season.</image:title>
<image:caption>The evening at Plymouth Telecom Club, Manadon was felt a success. Our Association is fortunate to have as a Full Member Andy Cottam, England Fly Fishing Captain and with multiple team caps. Andy brought with him his extensive fly tying kit, described the competition rules and how it influences fly patterns and he tied up a handful of his successful favourites. Media Officer, Graeme Webster tied some nymphs and shared how he has overcome the challenges of using non-animal based materials to tie his flies. Other members brought in tackle curiosities to discuss and a book swap. Big thanks to Andy for giving his creations away, and all members who attended. It was a really enjoyable evening and something we plan to repeat to kick off the season in the future. The only problem was, we were chatting so much we forgot to take photos!!! Tight lines for the coming season and remember, the season proper kicks off on Saturday! PDFAA Committee</image:caption>

<image:title>PDFAA News - Remembering Malcolm - We are very sad to report the passing of long term member Malcolm Palmer.</image:title>
<image:caption>In the words of his widow Annette; "Malcolm became unwell in July and was subsequently diagnosed with a brain tumour. Sadly before treatment could start he deteriorated to the extent that the decision was made for end of life care only. He left us to fish in the sky on Wed 28 September 2022." Malcolm lived in Poole, Dorset and owned a lodge at Harford Bridge, Tavistock and shared his time there and Poole in the Summer months. Although a Full Member, Malcolm's interest was in the wild Brown Trout only and I can attest that he thoroughly recorded his catches and very impressive his catch return was too, with some good fish, all carefully returned. Malcolm will be sorely missed at bank clearance party's, fishing on the river and at meetings where his thoughts and experience were always very valued. I am sure you will all join me in sympathy for his wife and family and for their very sad loss. Mike Green (Treasurer) ——— Annette has said that any Members are welcome to attend his funeral in Poole on 18th October. We would ask anyone wishing to attend to email the Committee for details. Annette went on to say “…no flowers please but donations gratefully received, should you wish to do so, for RNLI and/or Dorset Wildlife Trust - Malcolm was a volunteer marine warden at Kimmeridge which is where I’d specifically like the funds to go to”. Links to those organisations are below: https://www.dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk https://rnli.org Rest in Peace Malcolm. A fantastic angler and true gent who will be missed by us all. <image:title>PDFAA News - Trout Season Drawing to a Close - Attention PDFAA Members.</image:title>
<image:caption>We wanted to give a quick reminder that the Trout season ends at midnight on 30th September. This applies to both brown trout and sea trout. The salmon season continues on some of our waters though with fishing for salmon ending on the following dates: Tavy - Midnight on 14th October Erme - Midnight on 31st October Plym, Cad & Meavy - Midnight on 15th December It has been a difficult season with hot weather and low water. Also worrying reports of smolt being caught in August, although we have had a bit of rain no so hopefully those fish can run to sea and perhaps we can all get some fish before things wind down. Fingers crossed for a better season in 2023. Tight lines! PDFAA Committee</image:caption>

<image:title>PDFAA News - Video - Flyfishing the Erme</image:title>
<image:caption>We have a new video on our YouTube Channel of fly fishing on the River Erme which you can see below. The first fish is from the lower Woodland Beat and the rest from the Playing Field Beat. We hope you enjoy this. We are working on other videos currently. Virtually all the footage comes from me currently and it would be great to see other anglers included. If you would like to contribute please get in touch and we will sort out getting clips transferred. If you are keen to record, please consider the following tips when using your phone: If using your phone film in landscape (holding your phone sidways not upright). Hold your phone steady. Ideally, rest your hands on something stable or use a tripod. Avoid zooming in as this turns tiny hand movements into huge hand movements. It is best to move closer yourself. Also, things can be zoomed during editing if need be. Film for a good 10 seconds after the action has ended. There will be more videos to come! PDFAA Committee</image:caption>

<image:title>PDFAA News - Celebrating Douglas Owen - Sadly we must say goodbye to a legend of the Club. Our Chairman, Jason Harper emailed the Membership to say:</image:title>
<image:caption>“It is with sadness we announce the passing of Dougie Owen at the age of 101. Dougie continued to fish into his 90s, and remained an honorary member of the Association after he had hung up his waders. Many of you will have known him well. He had a wealth of knowledge and wisdom about the rivers, and I was lucky enough to bump into him on the bank of the Plym 7 years ago, when he walked me along the pools and showed me where to find the fish. His daughters Belinda and Caroline are making arrangements for a service, and if it be their wish, I shall forward the details along so that those of you who knew him can pay your respects. Kind regards, Jason” Former Chair and current Treasurer, Mike Green went on to pay tribute: “In memory of Douglas Owen. This picture taken Thursday, 12 September 2013 Dougie Owen with a 22lb hen from Kilmoo, Taymont, Perth. Douglas was 93 at this time! I first met Douglas at a PDFAA Committee meeting when applying for membership around 1988/99. Douglas was Chairman then, I'm sure. After explaining the selection process he detailed me to move a bunch of chairs into the meeting room at the Officers Mess, Mount Wise. My application was successful and I was volunteered to help reverse the process! I remember the meetings to be very lively back then. Douglas was always keen to show new members where to fish and was sometimes as surprised as the new angler when they caught where he said! As a committed committee man, Douglas did a huge amount for the Association and was instrumental in acquiring a lot of the water we enjoy today. I intend to fish "Dougie's Pool" on the Tavy this year with a rod I purchased from him and will take a dram, pause and reflect on his advice so freely given. " To Douglas" Mike Green Treasurer PDFAA” Other Members have also paid their tributes, including Committee Member Any Cottam who said: “Sad news indeed. Douglas spent a huge amount of time promoting and supporting the clubs interests and like many other people in a voluntary role, much of their hard work goes on unnoticed, behind the scenes, but without it, the club wouldn't be where it is today. Douglas used to ring me at about 10.00pm at night to ask if i could arrange to trim a branch back on a pool somewhere, a testimony to his enthusiasm and commitment to the club and to his enjoyment of fishing on the river. Please pass on my thoughts to his family. Regards Andy. “ Here’s to you Dougie! The PDFAA Committee</image:caption>

<image:caption>Well the start to the season has seen some unseasonably chilly weather (whatever seasons mean these days) but moving forward from this weekend we see the temperatures steadily warming and expect to see our rivers waking up. With this in mind, we have added a new page to the website. We now have a some Catch & Release Tips on the site which we hope will be informative or at least a useful refresher. <image:title>PDFAA News - New Season, New Water!</image:title>
<image:caption>Hello all. As the new season approaches we are pleased to be able to announce that we have managed to secure access to water on the River Erme. There are two beats, one around 500 metres and the other 400 metres in length. You can see both of these on the beats page of this site. We are really pleased to have access to this water and hope members enjoy it. In years past, these parts of the river were fished by the Cleave Angling Club which has since ceased to operate. We very much hope previous members might look to join our Club to access these beats as well as the other wonderful waters we have available. The season is only a month away so get tying and buying. Not long now! Tight lines! PDFAA Committee</image:caption>

<image:title>PDFAA News - Recycle Your Line</image:title>
<image:caption>Hello all. As we approach the new season we just wanted to make you aware of this great scheme to recyle your used tippets, leaders and line. The Anglers' National Line Recycling Scheme does exactly what the name suggests. When we consider the amount of plastic poentially going to landfill it absolutely makes sense to get onboard. You can read more via the ANLRS website at: https://www.anglers-nlrs.co.uk/ To recyle your line you can visit a bin loacation. In Plymouth we have Plymouth Angling Centre, 131 Victoria Road, St Budeaux, Plymouth, Devon PL5 1RZ Alternatively you can collect your own line and then when you have a reasonable amount send it direct to: ANLRS 12 Rosedene Close Brighton BN2 6LE As a Club we wholeheartedly encourage members to make use of this fantastic scheme. <image:title>PDFAA News - A Call to Action</image:title>
<image:caption>A message from our Club Secretary, Jason Harper. Hello Folks, Sadly the Lords amendment of clause 45 (to place a legal duty on water companies over the sewerage they release), was rejected with the majority of MPs voting against it last week citing cost as a factor. https://www.theriverstrust.org/about-us/news/sewage-scaremongering You can see how your local MP voted on the clause here (ayes voted to reject the clause), https://votes.parliament.uk/Votes/Commons/Division/1116 My MP, Gary Streeter voted "aye" (to reject the amendment). The Bill now goes back to the Lords which has indicated it will re-insert the clause before sending it back to the Commons again. The Government is trying to prevent this by making vague assurances of greater legal protection. However, its track record on keeping promises is not good, and anything they offer wil afford less protection than the proposed Lords amendment (otherwise it would have been accepted). If you feel this issue is important, you may wish to contact your MP before the Lords send the Bill back to the commons again, and ask them to support the amendment this time around. You could direct them to this map, and specifically our Plymouth region, which shows a frankly disgraceful record of raw sewerage release into our rivers, and subsequently our National Marine Reserve, Plymouth Sound: https://arcg.is/19LiCa Of particular concern shouod be the Gratton works on the Meavy. You can find details of how to contact your MP here: https://members.parliament.uk/members/Commons With thanks, Jason</image:caption>

<image:title>PDFAA News - PDFAA End of Season Meet</image:title>
<image:caption>Saturday 16th October, 2021 saw a gaggle of PDFAA members get together at Burrator Resevoir for the end of season Club Meet. Our Chair, Mike Grren said: “Big thanks to the members who attended the PDFAA Social Fish at Burrator today, Saturday 16th October. The fishing was not easy, even if Malcolm Palmer made it look so!. The first fish went to Malcolm at 10.55 on a booby type fly as the ripple began to fill in. Next fish went to Malcolm and probably the next. Everyone frantically searched their fly boxes for similar as it seemed the fish were well down in the water. Mike Green managed 3 fish by the time he had had enough standing up to his middle in water. Malcolm finished with a very respectful 4 fish. It was very notable the Burrator Fly Fishing members were absent from the water and SWLT catch returns reflect the lower than usual catch rate so without doubt, no shame in blanking today!” That’s easy for Mike to say. He caught 3!!! We hope you enjoy the photo’s from the day. It’s been a wonderful season on our rivers. Of course you can still fish the Plym and Cad for salmon until 15th December but all our other waters are now closed until next season to allow our fish to spawn. There have been some great catches includeing some fine brown trout from unexpected places. If members are not planning to chase salmon then please fill in your Catch Return and return it as soon as possib;e. Thank you all and see you next season! PDFAA Committee</image:caption>

<image:title>PDFAA News - The State of our Rivers</image:title>
<image:caption>So as the migratory and non-migratory trout seasons come to an end (midnight on 30th September remember) we draw your attention to this important report from the Rivers Trust. You won’t be surprised to hear that the report is not great reading. Environmental impacts on our waters continue to significantly affect these fragile eco-systems. We would urge you to watch the video below and also to visit the Rivers Trust Website to see how to get involved in helping to protect the places we love so much.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Yes as the title suggests another trout season sprints towards it’s conclusion. A little earlier this year but that’s good for our rivers and our fish. Just to remove any ambiguity, the LAST DAY YOU CAN FISH for each species in our waters is as follows: Brown Trout - 30th September Sea Trout - 30th September Salmon (Tavy) - 14th October Salmon (Plym) - 15th December Please ensure that you stick to these dates and ensure that you are using tackle for species that are in season. <image:title>PDFAA News - Looking After Our Rivers</image:title>
<image:caption>A message from our Secretary, Jason Harper: —- Dear All, I hope that everyone is keeping safe and well, and enjoying some freedom at last. It has been so hot lately that I doubt much fishing has been done? The vaunted thunderstorms have not arrived (yet), but i think will be welcome if they do. The rivers probably need a good flush through. Please can I put in a mention for the West Country Rivers Trust "Plymouth River Keepers" initiative. It is not an angling specific drive, but more of a voluntary citizen science initiative to monitor the health of the small streams that flow through northern Plymouth, and engage the public with their ecology, and environmental health: https://wrt.org.uk/project/plymouth-river-keepers/ Also, uur Chairman, Mike, has asked me to circulate this to all members. Soem of you may have seen the news reports of pacific pink salmon turning up in East Coast Scottish rivers, and they may be establishing themselves. We know what damage non native species (think red clawed crayfish and Himalayan balsam) can do! In addition, please keep an eye out for red skin disease, and follow good biosecure protocols after fishing for your waders and nets, to prevent possible spread of diseas between our rivers (Plym catchment and Tavy): https://anglingtrust.net/2021/07/14/call-for-anglers-to-be-vigilant-to-help-protect-the-atlantic-salmon/</image:caption>

<image:title>PDFAA News - The Plym, Cad & Meavy Salmon Season</image:title>
<image:caption>Hello, A message to all members. The Salmon season opens on the Plym (including the Meavy and Cad) Wednesday 31st March. Please remember that all fish must returned up until 16th June, and after that only even numbered fish up to a season limit of 3 fish can be kept for the table with the first fish being released and all alternate fish thereafter. In anticipation that we'll have some good catches this year, I am forwarding on this catch and release guide for the Wye and Usk Foundation, How to look after your salmon: https://wyes.foleon.com/passport/catch-release-for-salmon-an-anglers-guide/cover/ We don't mandate the replacing of treble hooks at our Association. However, I would be interested to hear member's views. With thanks, Jason Harper (PDFAA Secretary)</image:caption>

<image:title>PDFAA News - 2021 Season… Not Long Now!</image:title>
<image:caption>The new season is nearly upon us and as we welcome new members to the Club we couldn’t be more excited! Our Secretary, Jason Harper, has put together the following info on dates and angling good practice as a useful guide: —- As a reminder, our sea trout season starts on 3rd March, our trout season on the 15th March, and fishing for Salmon on the 1st March (Tavy) 1st April (Plym, Meavy and Cad) For salmon, all fish before 16th June must be returned, and the only permissible means of fishing until this date is fly or artificial lure. The minimum size for keeping trout and sea trout in our rivers is 18cm, although many fish are still juvenile at this size and will not have had a chance to spawn, so please exercise your good judgement. If a fish has parr or "thumb print" markings down its side it is not fully mature. The use of barbless hooks is actively encouraged, please wetten your hands before handling fish, and try to keep them in the water if possible. A guide to catch and release can be found here, https://www.wildtrout.org/content/catch-and-release Catch and release has been around for a long time and is now very widely adopted in many fisheries around the world, most famously in the USA and New Zealand but increasingly in countries that traditionally catch trout for the pot such as France, Spain and Italy, where ‘ no kill’ zones are now designated in some rivers. One notable exception is Germany where angling on a catch and release ... www.wildtrout.org —— When the season starts please do follow the latest guidance from the government and Angling Trust. Currently this means fishin in your most local waters. In other news, our AGM will be happening via Zoom on Tuesday 23rd February at 7-9pm. All members should have had an invitation but please do email us if you haven’t and we’ll send one out. Please check back here after the AGM for news on any updates coming from the AGM Tight lines! <image:title>PDFAA News - PDFAA is Open for New Members!</image:title>
<image:caption>Attention anglers, Plymouth & District Freshwater Angling Association (PDFAA) have spaces available for new members for the 2021 season!!! Experienced river anglers will love our extensive waters with good stocks of wild brown trout, sea trout and salmon. The Tavy in particular is renowned for the latter with some real beasts! We would also welcome people new to the sport and perhaps experienced saltwater anglers looking for a new challenge. Fishing rivers is a discipline like no other with skill and guile and constant movement being needed to cover the water and get fish. It certainly isn’t sitting in a deck chair with a thermos! Fishing is predominantly on the fly with spinning being permitted for salmon and sea trout. We have rights to the river Plym from Plymbridge up to Bickleigh Bridge. Also, the rivers around Shaugh Prior which are the Cad from Shaugh Bridge up to just below Cadover and the Meavy from Shaugh Bridge up to Lower Goodmeavy. We also have an extensive stretch of the Tavy from the Power Station to Harford Bridge and additional water near the trout fishery. For anyone interested in starting fly fishing, getting set up is cheaper than you would think. There are good packages available and we have put together links to get you going below: · Starter kit – A 9 foot 5WT set up will cover you for most conditions starting out for trout and this kit comes with all you need from a top class company based in Plympton: https://bit.ly/39otane · Spare tapered leaders (these go on the end of your fly line (size 4x should cover all your flies): https://bit.ly/39YcNx5 · Flies – The only problem with the starter kit is the flies are not good. The mixed pack is always a good option (If you aren’t catching, go smaller): o Dry flies https://bit.ly/3qNHg7H o Wet flies https://bit.ly/3ogQl7g o Nymphs https://bit.ly/3c8fkaK There are lots of good flyfishing videos on YouTube and members are always happy to pass on any tips in our Private Facebook group. Membership is £75 per season for Trout members (fishing for Brown Trout only) and £150 per season for Salmon and Sea Trout membership. If you would like to read more or to make an inquiry about membership, visit us at https://pdfaa.org Tight lines! PS Members please tell your friends!</image:caption>

<image:title>PDFAA News - Lockdown 3: Fishing is Allowed</image:title>
<image:caption>The Angling Trust have confirmed that the Government in England are allowing fishing as a permitted form of exercise. This has followed lobbying from the Trust following an initial announcement that angling was prohibited. With rumblings suggesting that the current lockdown could continue into the fishing season for our waters, this is great news! See the link at the bottom of this post for more detailed info. As we move towards the season we will be making a push for new members so this news definitely helps. Please do let people know about us. Happy New Year! PDFAA Committee</image:caption>

<image:title>PDFAA News - Angling Trust Confirm that Fishing can Continue</image:title>
<image:caption>We are relieved to report that the Angling Trust have confirmed that fishing can continue during lockdown, as long as the rules are applied. An update on their website to a report that they were lobbying Government reads: ”The Angling Trust is pleased that the government has recognised the value of allowing angling and other forms of outdoor recreation to continue – with members of your own household or with one other individual – through next month’s lockdown. It seems that tackle shops will still be able to operate a ‘click and collect’ service. So we are still fishing. Whilst we need to see the precise details in the regulations laid before Parliament on Monday it is likely there will be impacts on certain areas of our sport and we will update everybody just as soon as we are able to do so. Thanks for your patience” We will of course update you via this site as well. This is good news for those of you still fishing the Plym for Salmon. The Salmon season closes in the Plym at midnight on 15th December. Tight lines and stay safe. PDFAA Committee</image:caption>

<image:title>PDFAA News - PDFAA Club Meet</image:title>
<image:caption>Saturday 5th September, 2020 saw many of the PDFAA members meet up for a day’s fishing at Burrator Reservoir. We were blessed with favourable weather conditions, if a little windy (isn’t it always up there) and the promise of shoals of trout being landed! It didn’t quite work out that way with the lake keeping her occupants under wraps for the most part with only one fish being caught over the day (I don’t remember who by but he was definitely the best looking person there) but as they say, it’s called fishing not catching! In any case, it was really fun to see people getting together. So often when you are fishing alone in our extensive waters it is easy to forget that you are part of a club. I think we all felt that sense of camaraderie that you only get when like minded people come together yesterday for a real laugh and a generous sharing of a combined experience of many, many decades! With the end of the season in sight today will be one of many great memories to keep us warm over the winter and was a great advert for our club. Thanks so much to Mike Green (Chair) and Jason Harper (Secretary) for getting everyone together and getting us fed. Good to meet all that came! (Graeme Webster, Website Editor) PS Enjoy the photos from the day below and please send any you are happy to share and they can be added to the gallery.</image:caption>

<image:title>PDFAA News - Check Out Our New Beat Maps!</image:title>
<image:caption>Hello all. Committee Members Mike Green (Chair) and Graeme Webster (Website Editor) have been hard at work developing the beat maps for the website. The previous maps are a work of art (and are still available) but feedback from some new members was that they could be hard to read, particularly when trying to find parking and access to the beats themselves. The new maps ave been made using Google Maps and show the beats thenselves (left and right bank), pools and marks and also parking. The pools and marks have photos to help to identify them. (You may notice that at the time of posting not all marks have pictures so please feel free to help out and share some if you have any). The added advantage of using Google Maps, of course, is that you can use it as a sat nav to take you straight to the parking spot for any new beats that you haven’t previously fished. Nifty eh?! We hope you like them and warmly welcome feedback.</image:caption>

<image:title>PDFAA News - Night fishing on the Plym: Buddy up!</image:title>
<image:caption>Dear Members, I hope that everyone is well and safe, as are your loved ones. I also hope that some of you have managed to take advantage of the loosening in lockdown, and our ability to fish again, and have managed to wet a line. We are approaching the peak of sea trout season, and I wanted to make you aware of a most unfortunate incident that befell two anglers from our sister association, with rights to the stretch downstream of Plymbridge. In an isolated incident, they were assaulted by a gang of youths while night fishing. Police enquiries are ongoing. in the meantime, as a precaution may I suggest that anglers planning a night session on our Plym stretch, arrange to go with a buddy. Maintain social distancing of course, but make sure that you know where each other are on the bank, are within reach and assistance of one another, and are able to stay in touch by mobile phone if necessary. Be safe, enjoy what the river has to offer this summer, be mindful of catch and release, and if you can without harming fish, take some photographs for our new website. Kind regards, Jason Hon. Secretary</image:caption>

<image:title>PDFAA News - Angling Trust: We will fish again!</image:title>
<image:caption>Great news for all anglers today that we will almost certainly be able to wet a line come Wednesday of this week (13th May). The news comes from the Angling Trust on their website which reads: “The Angling Trust has given a warm welcome to the announcement today (May 10th) by Prime Minster Boris Johnson that recreational fishing looks set to resume in England on Wednesday, May 13th. The Prime Minister announced the resumption of ‘unlimited outdoor sports’ from Wednesday providing they are conducted alone or with members of the same household and that social distancing rules are followed at all times. A government source confirmed that “outdoor exercise includes angling, golf, water sports and tennis providing social distanced from Wednesday.” As an Association we would like to reitterate the importance of following social distancing advice to keep the people safe and to protect our NHS. We will update you with any specific details as they emerge. Stay safe and tight lines! PDFAA Committee</image:caption>

<image:title>PDFAA News - Angling Trust asks: When will we fish again?</image:title>
<image:caption>Hello folks, I do hope that everyone is keeping safe and well, and behaving... Our Chair, Mike Green, has been sent details of the Angling Trust's proposal to Government (details below) asking for angling to be allowed again as a permitted activity. The proposal advocates a phased return to fishing, observing government guidelines around distancing and non essential travel. It has been constructed so that each phase correlates to a likely easing of constraints by the Government. I hope that the proposal is considered, although being realistic, I think we should not expect too much until the lockdown restrictions begin to ease. Fishing probably has as much call to resume as other water based activities (sailing, rowing, swimming, kayaking), and the Government will want to ensure that any activities are safe and manageable. The more we stay in I guess, the sooner that will be. Take care all, and my best wishes, Jason Harper (Secretary)</image:caption>

<image:title>PDFAA News - Angling and COVID-19</image:title>
<image:caption>In answer to member enquiries, I have contacted the Angling Trust for clarification on the COVID-19 Government Directive regarding are we aloud to fish. The answer is unfortunately NOT at this time. I will try bring you the most up to date information, also could I suggest that members keep abreast of things via the Angling Trust website and on Facebook-other anglers comments make interesting reading! So, chins up, we are all in this together but if it is any consolation I have been in the Association long enough to remember the Foot and Mouth crisis and how good the fishing and wildlife sightings were immediately after access to the countryside was re-established.
